Scholastic Art & Writing Awards - Alliance for Young Artists & Writers

How to Enter

1. Create your account

Enter your best art and writing for the opportunity to win local and national recognition. Join a community of young artists and writers across the country!

You’ll need to create an account at portal.artandwriting.org to enter the Scholastic Awards. We’ll ask for:

  • Your name
  • Your grade
  • Your email (make sure to use an email that you check regularly, and that can receive emails from external senders!)
  • Your parent/guardian’s name and email
  • Your home address
  • Your school (or if you’re homeschooled)

Educators, it’s even simpler: We just need your name and your school.

The Scholastic Awards open for entries in the fall. Deadlines are determined by region and begin in December.

2. Upload your work

We want to see what inspires you! The first step in uploading work is selecting your work’s category. The Scholastic Awards accept work in more than twenty categories. Choose the one that best represents your work. Be sure to read our category guidelines.

This is also when you’ll attach an educator to your work. Once you connect an educator, they’ll be able to edit your work and complete payment.

Educators, you’ll only be able to see teens who have already connected you to a work. Make sure to create your account first, so that your students can select you from the list of educators at their school!

All entries must be entered through the online portal. Your work’s category determines what you have to upload, such as number of photos, word count, etc.

Writing works must be entered through the portal’s text fields. You can type in your works directly or copy + paste them. PDFs are not accepted.

Art works must be entered as digital images. Click below for tips on sharing high-quality images of your artwork.

3. Pay for Your Entry

Entry fees are $15 per individual entry and $40 per portfolio. Portfolio entries are only open to current seniors.

Payment methods vary by region. All regions allow online payments via Stripe.

Some regions accept cash or check payments directly from individual participants. Follow directions provided by your Regional Affiliate if paying by cash or check, and contact them directly with any questions.

Some regions accept bulk payment from schools and educators, paying on behalf of their students.

Across all regions, the Scholastic Awards offer fee waivers for teens who cannot afford the entry fee. We trust you to be honest about your financial need. You are not required to provide proof of financial need within the Portal.

If you and your family CAN afford the entry fee, please pay it. The Awards are run by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit organization, and our Regional Partners. Entry fees help keep this opportunity available to everyone!

Some Regional Affiliates may request more information when using a fee waiver. If so, please follow their instructions. If the Scholastic Awards team has a concern about fee waiver use, we reserve the right to follow up with participants.

Fee waivers are made possible, in part, by BLICK Art Materials.
